Penny Cars Stadium - Airdrie | Plantroom refurbishment

Penny Cars Stadium is a busy football complex made up of a main 10,000 seater stadium, 5, 6 & 7 a-side pitches. Open 7 days a week, the stadium is home to Airdrieonians F.C., currently in Scottish League One. The stadium is also used for the Celtic F.C Woman’s team, 2021 champions of the Scottish Woman’s Premier League Cup. Penny Cars Stadium also has 6 function suites, suitable for parties of between 20 and 160 persons and can be fully catered if required, an in-house catering kitchen.

The existing hot water plant at the stadium is comprised of 3 heating boilers, 2 direct fired hot water generators, 2 500 litre buffer vessels as well as a costly flue dilution system. The benefits in replacing these units with 2 CoilMaster combined boilers and 2 Silox 600 Ltr fast recovery DHW twin tank cylinders meant the reduction of gas pipework in the plantroom and reduced the number of flues from 5 to 2. The resulting reduction gives annual savings on gas appliance servicing and will also show reductions on gas consumption, making the new installation more environmentally friendly than before and more economical to run. As the flue terminals do not exceed the limits set out in the clean air act, we were able to use concentric flue, negating the need for a potentially costly shared flue installation.

Working with Mark Sneddon of Airdrie Mechanical Services, the main criteria considered when choosing the replacement units for this busy sports stadium were reliability and high volume hot water delivery. Being used 7 days a week, the boilers needed to be able to serve the changing rooms for all the clubs accessing the complex, and providing fans and visitors to the site a comfortable experience. The CoilMaster is a perfect choice where heating and hot water are required, as they work on a hot water principle, so will generate heating until a hot water requirement is presented. The CoilMaster will then switch to hot water mode until this is satisfied. Designed to optimise efficiency and performance, the CoilMaster has a stainless steel coil that allows an instantaneous, continuous supply of hot water. Thanks to the fast heat recovery of the boilers and water storage supplemented by the Silox cylinders, the switching of the boilers will go undetected by the building users.

The CoilMaster units are manufactured in stainless steel and come with a 10 year fire tube heat exchanger warranty are NOX class 6 classification and achieve a class A rating for water heating efficiency. The Silox cylinder is a twin wall construction, DHW cylinder of stainless steel, which allows a higher rate of heat transfer from the primary to the domestic cylinder for faster recovery than a standard coil cylinder.
